Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (or AMD) is a disease that blurs your central vision, making it hard to focus on objects directly in front of you. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting macular degeneration in its early stages when treatment is most effective. At Mad River Eye Care, our eye doctor uses advanced diagnostic tools to assess your overall eye health and identify any signs of macular degeneration.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

There are two main types of AMD: dry AMD and wet AMD. Dry AMD is more common and progresses slowly over time, causing gradual central vision loss. Unfortunately, there are currently no treatment options for dry AMD, but our eye doctor at Mad River Eye Care can recommend vision aids such as magnifiers or special glasses to help you see better. In addition, studies have shown that certain supplements like vitamins C and E, zinc, and lutein may help slow the progression of dry AMD.

Wet AMD, on the other hand, is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid vision loss. The good news is that there are several treatment options available for wet AMD, including anti-VEGF injections that can help stop the growth of these abnormal blood vessels. Our experienced eye doctor can determine the best course of action for your specific case.
