Dry Eye Specialist in

Waitsfield, VT

Everyone deals with dry, red, and watery eyes at some point in their lives, whether it’s from staring at screens for too long or spending time in a dry climate. But for some people, dealing with dry eyes can be a daily struggle. If your symptoms persist or seem to be getting worse, it’s time to seek help. While artificial tears may provide relief in some cases, it is a temporary fix that treats the symptoms and not the underlying cause. At Mad River Eye Care, our dry eye specialist in Waitsfield, Vermont can identify the root cause of your symptoms and help get you started on the path to long-term relief.

What is dry eye syndrome?

If your eyes don’t produce enough tears or if your tears evaporate too quickly, you may have dry eye syndrome. Many people mistake the symptoms of dry eyes for other conditions such as allergies, which is why it is important to see an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis. The right treatment can help you find lasting relief and heal any damage to your cornea (the clear, dome-shaped covering on your eye).

Common dry eye symptoms in Waitsfield, VT

Dry eye symptoms can vary from person to person, but some of the most common symptoms of dry eye are:

  • Burning sensation in the eyes
  • Dry or scratchy feeling in the eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Redness in the eyes
  • Itching or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Gritty feeling like there’s something in the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Watery or teary eyes
  • Stringy mucus near the eye
  • Crusty eyes

Causes of dry eyes in Waitsfield, VT

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of dry eye. The meibomian glands are tiny oil-producing glands located along the margins of your eyelids. These glands play a crucial role in producing the oil that helps keep your tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands become blocked or dysfunctional, it can lead to a decrease in oil production, resulting in an unstable tear film and leading to dry eye symptoms.

Other causes of dry eye include:

  • Age-related changes in the eyes
  • Contact lens wear
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
  • Certain medications (including antihistamines, heart medications, antidepressants, and birth control pills)
  • Hormonal changes in women during pregnancy or after menopause
  • Certain illnesses (including rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, thyroid disease, and lupus)
  • Environmental factors like living in a dry or windy climate, air conditioning, and central heating
  • Poor blinking habits while staring at screens or reading for long periods

How is dry eye syndrome diagnosed in Waitsfield, VT?

At Mad River Eye Care, the first step in diagnosing dry eye is to perform a comprehensive eye exam. During this exam, our skilled eye doctor will conduct a series of tests to diagnose dry eye syndrome, such as evaluating your tear quality and volume, evaporation rate, and chemical composition. Depending on your specific needs, we will recommend a personalized treatment plan to help alleviate your symptoms and improve your overall eye health.

Dry eye treatment in Waitsfield, VT

Treatment for dry eye varies depending on how severe it is and what’s causing it. If your eyes occasionally feel dry or scratchy, this may be a temporary situation if your dry eye is caused by environmental factors. In many cases, however, dry eye is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management of symptoms.

Some of the treatments we offer include:

  • Prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation
  • Treating oil glands
  • Blinking exercises or proper eyelid hygiene

If you’re dealing with chronic or severe dry eye, our eye doctor might suggest more advanced treatments. At Mad River Eye Care, we offer cutting-edge treatments such as amniotic membranes and punctal plugs. An amniotic membrane is a regenerative tissue that can promote healing and reduce inflammation in the eyes. Punctal plugs are tiny inserts placed in the tear ducts to prevent tears from draining too quickly, helping to keep the eyes moist and comfortable. Our experienced optometrist will work with you to create a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and helps restore moisture and comfort to your eyes.
